Self-Guided Discoveries offer many activities to enhance the visit of groups who choose to explore on their own. Various materials are available to enhance your experience. Cost $3 per student.

All sculpture gallery exhibitions offer a Gallery Guide describing the current exhibition, and many also have Family Looking Guides to provide additional, fun activities related to the artwork.
A set of imaginative, child-friendly Activity Cards will help chaperones navigate the ten distinct areas of the Lena Meijer Children’s Gardens. Cards provide suggestions for three age/difficulty levels. Download Activity Cards PDF
Explore the Wetlands with our Wetlands Bingo worksheet. From dragonflies to cattails, students learn about this fascinating habitat as they try to find all the pictured features.
The 1930s come alive at our Michigan’s Farm Garden. Discover how farming used to be done as you try your hand at our Tool Matching Challenge in the barn.
For additional fun in the Sculpture Park, students are encouraged to identify certain sculptures in order to complete a mystery sentence (Sculpture Park Search and Find). Make art appreciation easy by using our Sculpture Catchers (based on the ever popular cootie catchers). These ingenious little manipulatives teach basic concepts that can be used to approach and understand any sculpture.
Available during our Butterflies are Blooming exhibition are both an identification guide to distinguish the various butterfly species and an Adopt-A-Butterfly worksheet to help the visitor understand butterfly basics including flight patterns, camouflage techniques and behaviors such as puddling.
Audio wands take the visitor on a narrated tour of four main areas: the Tropical Conservatory, the Arid Garden, the Sculpture Park and Michigan’s Farm Garden. Wands are available in the library and rent for $1 each. Wands may be used individually or in pairs.
Sketching is welcomed throughout Meijer Gardens. We have clipboards as well as portable sketching stools for your use. Please request these materials at the time you make your reservation.
